And speaking of baseball…

Doesn’t it seem odd that last year, while the debate about adding instant replay was going on, suddenly the Umps start blowing home run calls, one for the Mets, one for the Yankees, and one for the Phillies. Baseball adds instant replay for home runs to the 2008 playoffs.

Now, with a push to expand instant replay, all of the sudden all the Umps in the 2009 playoffs are deaf, blind, and dumb. I’ve never seen umpiring this bad. The bizarre thing is, in the past and without instant replay, the umps would almost always get even the closest plays right — calls that, before I saw a replay in slow-mo, I was sure they’d gotten wrong.

Maybe it’s just a coincidence…

I think the NFL and CFB has done a good job with instant replay, Having a “ruling on the field”, and going to instant replay under certain circumstances, and with the review, looking for a specific item, not on every single play. Baseball should actually be easier to do Instant Replay, since there are only a few things happening at once. In addition you don’t have to look at 22 different people on the field to make sure this one isn’t doing an illegal contact, that one isn’t holding, the other dude didn’t step out of bounds, no hands to the face over there, the other guy didn’t rough the passer, and lastly that nobody touched anybody’s face mask. They just need to make sure it doesn’t get out of hand with reviewing every pitch to see if it was inside or outside the strike zone.

I disagree — I think the NFL’s instant replay slows the game down far too much and actually causes the reversal of what would have been obvious calls, in many cases based on extremely minor things. Hockey probably does instant replay the best — only for goals and it’s automatic. No challenge flags or anything like that. I was glad to see MLB decided not to expand instant replay.
